Tuina is part of the traditional medicine of China. Central to the understanding of this medicine is the concept of qi. Qi is the life force or vital energy, which in traditional Chinese thought is understood to flow through all living things, including our own bodies.
In a healthy person the qi flows smoothly around the body. If, however, the flow is disrupted then illness can occur. Tuina aims to rebalance both the flow of qi and the muscles and joints through gentle, but stimulating massage techniques. These techniques work on the whole body and on specific acupuncture points.
At your first consultation, you will be asked detailed questions about yourself and your condition. When necessary your pulses will be taken on both wrists, your tongue will be examined, and the affected area of the body may be palpated before coming to a traditional diagnosis.
The treatment consists of massage working on the whole body, with a focus on certain areas and acupuncture points. Most of the techniques are very gentle, with the aim of smoothing and rebalancing the body on all levels. The treatment is always carried out through clothing and lasts around 35 minutes.
Before treatment it is best not to have eaten a heavy meal and you should avoid alcohol and coffee and also foods which might colour your tongue. It is preferable if you wear loose cotton clothing.
